Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a process by which you choose certain times of the day, or week to allow the body to rest (through fasting). People fast for religious, spiritual & health purposes.
“Why is it that the normal diet is three meals a day plus snacks? It isn’t that it’s the healthiest eating pattern, now that’s my opinion but I think there is a lot of evidence to support that. There are a lot of pressures to have that eating pattern, there’s a lot of money involved. The food industry — are they going to make money from skipping breakfast like I did today? No, they’re going to lose money. If people fast, the food industry loses money. What about the pharmaceutical industries? What if people do some intermittent fasting, exercise periodically and are very healthy, is the pharmaceutical industry going to make any money on healthy people?” Mark Mattson – Chief of the Laboratory of Neuroscience at the National Institute on Aging.
In my 20’s & early 30’s I usually skipped breakfast and then ate a late lunch and/or a larger dinner. I had energy. I was consuming adequate calories & maintained my ideal weight. I was told by friends and family that I shouldn’t skip meals. I also read a lot about the importance of eating smaller meals more frequently. I stopped listening to by body. When I read this article on intermittent fasting & watched the videos, it was like having an ‘aha’ moment. Click here for more information.
Is it for Everyone?
Intermittent Fasting (IF) is not for everyone. You need to listen to your body. You need to know how you feel. Additionally, there are several contraindications to IF.
Food & Awareness
I do not restrict food when I am hungry. If I am hungry – I eat. (Yes, even if that means breaking my ‘fast’). Along with the Eating Guidelines outlined by Geneen Roth in her book, Women Food and God, I follow my own version the Hunger Scale.
“On a scale of 1-10, how hungry am I?”
When I ‘check-in’, I may find that I am not hungry at all. There may be something else going on that I am trying to avoid or resist. If I am hungry, bringing this awareness creates space to choose accordingly. Plant based protein, fruits & veggies support my health. I am learning to ‘crave’ the right foods.
“If you pay attention to when your body is hungry, what your body wants, what you are eating, when you’ve had enough, you end the obsession because obsession and awareness cannot coexist.” Geneen Roth, Women Food & God

“Treat yourself as if you already are enough. Walk as if you are enough. Eat as if you are enough. See, look, listen as if you are enough. Because it’s true.” ― Geneen Roth
